Olympia is the site where the original Olympic Games took place every 4 years. Situated in a valley in Elis, western Peloponissos it was not a town but a sanctuary, and the buildings were all associated with Games and with worship of the Gods. Of these the most famous are the Temple of Zeus and the Heraeum which was dedicated to Hera the wife of Zeus, in which was found the table where they placed all the garlands for the victors of the Games. Also within the sanctuary were numerous gymnasiums, schools, stadiums and even a hippodrome.
